ST&L 1-Day Provision & Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER) Awareness Programme

ST&L 1-Day Provision & Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER) Awareness Programme

Provider: Safety, Technology & Legislation Limited

Class

PUWERMachinery Safety

Summary

This 1-day PUWER Awareness course offers a clear and practical introduction to the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER).

Delegates gain an understanding of how PUWER applies to all work equipment covered by the Health & Safety at Work Act, including machinery, tools, lifting equipment and mobile work equipment.

Through real-world examples and visual references, the course builds confidence in the legal duties and core principles that underpin safe work-equipment management.

Key learning content

Delegates are guided through the legal framework of PUWER Regulations 1–24 and the associated guidance set out in the Approved Code of Practice (L22).

The course explains when PUWER inspections are required, what they should include, and how they are typically informed by relevant European and International standards.

It also explores common hazards linked to machinery and work equipment, along with key considerations when selecting, purchasing or introducing new equipment to ensure PUWER compliance and alignment with the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC.

Who is this course for?

This awareness-level programme is designed for individuals who use, supervise or hold responsibility for work equipment and machinery, including:

  • Maintenance Engineers and Technicians
  • Production, Operations and Shift Supervisors
  • Machine Operators, Setters, Line Leaders and Team Leaders
  • Engineering Supervisors and first-line managers
  • Health & Safety Representatives and Coordinators seeking an introductory PUWER course
  • Purchasing and Procurement Personnel involved in selecting machinery and equipment
  • Members of project, installation or commissioning teams who need a general understanding of PUWER duties

Delivery format

This 1-day course is delivered face-to-face by experienced teaching professionals with extensive machinery-safety expertise.

The session is highly interactive, encouraging delegates to discuss their own equipment, challenges and operational scenarios to ensure the learning is directly applicable to their roles.

This delivery approach makes the programme suitable for both individual delegates and organisations looking to build PUWER awareness across their engineering or operational teams.

All participants receive an attendance certificate upon completion.

Pricing and options

  • Public programme at ST&L’s venue: £300 per delegate (ex VAT).
  • In-house at your venue: £3,750 (ex VAT) per session for up to 10 delegates.

  • Build a baseline understanding of when PUWER inspections are required and the essential elements they should include.
  • Increase awareness of common machinery and work-equipment hazards and emphasise the importance of implementing effective control measures.
  • Introduce how European and International standards underpin PUWER compliance and connect with the requirements of the Machinery Directive.
  • Outline key factors to consider when procuring new machinery or equipment to help ensure PUWER compliance is achieved from the outset.

Objectives

By the end of the course, delegates will be able to:

  • Describe the scope of PUWER and the range of work equipment it applies to.
  • Summarise the key requirements of PUWER Regulations 1–24 and understand their relationship to the Approved Code of Practice (L22).
  • Explain when PUWER inspections are required and identify the core elements an inspection should cover.
